Department of Economics

Department of Economics, founded on January 13, 1977 within the Kayseri Business Faculty , has started education in 1980 with 75 students enrolled in undergraduate Economics program.

Our department aims to train economists of the future, who can contribute to the solution of economic problems, to produce both theoretical and empirical knowledge in economics through scientific research, to enable our students to succeed in professional life by providing them theoretical knowledge along with their real-life applications.

For achieving these goals, we employ 6 professors, 3 associate professors, 6 assistant professors, 1 lecturer and 9 research assistants. In 2018, our department offers education for 1446 students, enrolled in daytime (730 students) and evening (716 students) programs. Furthermore, department academics provide consulting service to various institutions, particularly to the Chamber of Industry, as a part of university-industry cooperation which is the most important means of converting knowledge into practice.

Students can choose among a broad range of elective courses compatible with their individual interests and professional goals. Beginning from the first year of study, academic advisors help our students to choose the courses enabling them to acquire required skills for the professions they intend to work in the future.

Our graduate students can find career opportunities in all private sectors of economy, notably in finance sector, and in a variety of job fields including inspectorships and specialists in public institutions.

ERU FEAS, Department of Economics have been accredited by AQAS, an international accreditation organization based in Germany, for a period of 7 years, valid from December 7, 2020 until December 30, 2027.

ECONOMICS GRADUATE PROGRAMS

The department of economics offers three different graduate programs, which are carried out within the Institute of Social Sciences, as master, doctorate and doctorate (in English) programs.

ECONOMICS MASTER PROGRAM

The master program has been run its education and training activities since 1989, affiliated to Erciyes University Institute of Social Sciences. The aim of this program is to train economics scientists who have the vision to be able to produce solutions by evaluating the economic problems from a critical, independent and scientific point of view. Key learning outcomes within the program framework are determined as follows:

  • Being able to produce the solutions for the problems they faced.
  • Being able to specialize in the sub-disciplines of economics.
  • Having the ability in using mathematical, statistical and econometric methods to solve the economic propositions.
  •  Having the scientific and moral values in collecting, analyzing and solving the economic data.
  • To gain the ability to prepare and write reports in the economic research process.
  • Having the ability in writing, speaking and understanding at least one foreign language in order to follow the foreign literature.
  • Having the ability to use package programs necessary required for economics.

To apply  for Economics Master Program, candidates must graduate one of the bachelor programs from Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences, Faculty of Economics, Faculty of Business Administration, Faculty of Political Sciences and/or departments of Actuarial, Actuarial and Risk Management, Banking, Banking and Finance, Banking and Insurance, Labor Economics and Industrial Relations, Maritime Business and Management, Maritime Transportation Engineering, Maritime Business Administration, Econometrics, Economics, Economics and Finance, Real Estate Development and Management, Real Estate and Asset Valuation, Entrepreneurship, Aviation Management, Economics, Islamic Economics and Finance, Statistics, Statistics and Computer Sciences, Business, Management Engineering, Business Management, Business and Economics, Hospitality Management, Logistics Management, Finance, Accounting and Auditing, Marketing, Health Management, Art and Cultural Management, Art Management, Capital Markets and Portfolio Management, Capital Market, Travel Management, Insurance and Risk Management, Insurance and Social Security, Sports Management, Agricultural Economics, Tourism Management, Tourism and Hotel Management, Transportation and Logistics, International Finance, International Finance and Banking, International Entrepreneurship, International Business Management, International Business, International Business and Trade, International Logistics and Transportation, International Logistics Management, International Trade, International Trade and Finance, International Trade and Logistics, International Trade and Logistics Management, Food and Beverage Management within other faculties and colleges.

Candidates who want to apply for this program must have a minimum score of 50 points or above from YDS (Foreign Language Proficiency Exam) or its equivalent in any other exam recognized by the Council of Higher Education, or an equivalent score from international foreign language tests the equivalency of which are accepted by ÖSYM (Assessment Selection and Placement Center). Candidates must get a minimum of 60 points in the type of equally-weighted score from ALES (Academic Staff and Graduate Education Entrance Exam). There are no written exam and interview exam for the program. The number of students to be admitted to the master program is a maximum of 20.

The Economics Master Program offers students compulsory courses such as microeconomics, macroeconomics and econometrics, as well as different elective courses (international economics, environmental economics, regional development, European Union, game theory, etc.). In this way, students can have the opportunity to specialize in economic fields for their interests.

In this program, examination regulations, assessments and grading are implemented according to “Erciyes University Institute of Social Sciences Graduate Education, Instructions and Examination Regulations”.  In order to graduate this master program, the students must have a Cumulative Grade Point Average of at least 2.50 out of 4.00, to complete two semesters (60 ECTS in total), and to prepare and defend a master thesis. Students who successfully complete this program are awarded a master of degree in economics.

Students who successfully graduate from the master program can apply for doctoral programs provided that they have a valid score in the relevant type from Academic Staff and Graduate Education Entrance Exam (ALES), have sufficient level of English language certificate (ÜDS, TOEFL etc.) and have sufficient master graduate average.

Students who graduate from the economics master program can employ in the upper positions both in the public and private sectors, to be entrepreneurs, continue their doctorate programs and advance in their academic careers at well-known universities at home and abroad.

ECONOMICS DOCTORATE PROGRAM

Economics doctorate program has been run its education and training activities since 1998, affiliated to Erciyes University Institute of Social Sciences. This program aims to upskill the student with the necessary skills related to the field to research independently, to comment by examining scientific problems and data from a wide and deep perspective, to analyze and to reach new syntheses. Key learning outcomes within the program framework are determined as follows:

  • Being able to produce solutions to the economic problems in the light of economic theory.
  • Being able to follow economic developments in the regional and global level.
  • Being able to specialize in the sub-discipline of economics such as the theory of economics, economic policy, economic development and international economics.
  • Being able to transform economic problems into statistical and economic models.
  • Having the ability to use mathematical, econometric and statistical methods in order to solve economic problems.
  • Being able to have sufficient background in a foreign language and in economic theory in order to follow foreign literature.

To apply economics doctorate program, candidates must graduate one of the master programs in Economics, Econometrics, Finance, Banking, Capital Markets, Insurance and/or sub-branches related to these fields. Candidates who want to apply for this program must have a minimum score of 55 points or above from YDS (Foreign Language Proficiency Exam) or its equivalent in any other exam recognized by the Council of Higher Education, or an equivalent score from international foreign language tests the equivalency of which are accepted by ÖSYM (Assessment Selection and Placement Center). Candidates must get a minimum of 65 points in the type of equally-weighted score from ALES (Academic Staff and Graduate Education Entrance Exam). It is obligatory to take the interview exam and have a minimum score of 60 from the interview exam. The number of students to be admitted to the doctorate program is a maximum of 12.

The doctorate program offers students compulsory courses such as microeconomics, macroeconomics, econometrics, as well as different elective courses (financial markets, international economics, energy economics, regional development, knowledge economics, European Union, etc.). In this way, students can have an advanced degree of specialization in the economic fields related to their interests.

The doctorate program consists of the course, the proficiency exam, the thesis proposal, thesis studies and thesis defense exam. Students must take a minimum of 240 ECTS (maximum of 360 ECTS) with a course equivalent to 60 ECTS, the doctorate proficiency  equivalent to 30 ECTS, the thesis proposal equivalent to 30 ECTS, and the thesis studies equivalent to 25 ECTS and the special field courses equivalent to 5 ECTS in thesis periods with at least 4-semesters. After a successful proficiency exam, students must complete the process which starts with the thesis proposal and ends with the thesis defense exam. Students who successfully complete this program are awarded a doctorate of degree in economics.

Students who graduate from the economics doctorate program can employ in the upper positions both in the public and private sectors, to be entrepreneurs, continue their post-doctorate programs and advance in their academic careers at well-known universities at home and abroad.

ECONOMICS DOCTORATE PROGRAM (ENGLISH)

 Economics doctorate program has been run its education and training activities since 2014, affiliated to Erciyes University Institute of Social Sciences. This program aims to upskill the student with the necessary skills related to the field to research independently, to comment by examining scientific problems and data from a wide and deep perspective, to analyze and to reach new syntheses. Key learning outcomes within the program framework are determined as follows:

  • Being able to produce solutions to the economic problems in light of the economic theory.
  • Being able to follow economic developments at local, national and international levels.
  • Being able to specialize in sub-parts of economics- such as economic theory, economic policy, economic development and international economic-which constitutes economics.
  • Being able to transform economic problems into mathematical, statistical and econometric models.
  • Having the ability to use mathematical, econometric and statistical methods to solve the economic problems.
  • Being able to follow economic literature in English, able to write economic articles, papers and thesis in English and able to present these studies in English.
  • Being able to have sufficient background in a foreign language and in economic theory in order to follow foreign literature.
